On this day 22 years ago, my 14-year-old cousin, Lauren Nicole Geeslin, breathed her last and crossed over into heaven. But today, instead of focusing on all the trauma and pain that resulted from her passing, I want to take a moment to remember her for who she was – a smart, compassionate young woman who loved others and loved the Lord.
Below is a poem that Lauren wrote about herself. It was read at her funeral, and to this day, is treasured by her family, friends and loved ones. I think this poem says a lot about her character, wisdom and what was important to her. I’m so thankful that we have this little piece of her in writing, and it’s an honor to share it with you.
She is still loved and missed every day, but we know that a joyous reunion in heaven awaits us one day. Until then, we’ll remember her – just like this.

I am caring and smart
I wonder about what will come of my future
I hear my friends having fun on a Friday
I see my mom hugging me tight
I want to become a better person
I am caring and smart
I pretend that I have my whole life together
I feel sad when people are picked on
I touch the clouds on a warm spring day
I worry about achieving my goals in life
I am caring and smart
I understand that nothing lasts forever
I say … Do unto others what you
Would want them to do to you
I dream about becoming a successful person
I try to help at least one person a day
I hope I live a long and healthy life
I am caring and smart
